ANCHORMEN SET TO BATTLE SALEM
STATE IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

Providence, R.I.óThe Rhode Island College menís basketball team will make the trek to Staten Island, N.Y. to battle Salem State in first round action of the 2012 NCAA Div. III Menís Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 2 (5:30 p.m.).

RIC (22-6) is making its sixth consecutive trip to the Big Dance and will face the Vikings (20-7), who captured both the MASCAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

Staten Island (24-4), which won the CUNYAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship, will battle Ithaca (14-13), which won the Empire 8 Conference Tournament title, in the other first round match.

Rhode Island College is one of five teams in the nation (Hope, Whitworth, Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Wooster) to play in the NCAA Tournament in each of the past six seasons.

"This group has really trusted each other and shown an incredible amount of toughness to earn a right to play for a national championship," RIC Head Coach Bob Walsh said. "Iím very proud of how far this team has come with so many guys having to step into new roles.  And to be one of only five teams in the country and the only one in the Northeast region to play in the last six NCAA Tournaments is just remarkable."

The Anchormen are 8-5 in NCAA Tournament action under Walsh, reaching the Elite Eight in 2007 and the Sweet 16 in both 2011 and 2010.

The Anchormen finished the regular season with a 10-4 record and three-way tie for second place in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen reached the 2012 Little East Conference Tournament Championship Game for the sixth consecutive season and fell to top-seeded Eastern Connecticut, 82-60, on Saturday, Feb. 25.
