SENIOR TRIO LEADS ANCHORWOMEN TO, 69-54,
WIN OVER BARUCH IN NCAA TOURNEY ACTION

Victory Sets Up Rematch With Emmanuel Tomorrow Night in Second Round

Providence, R.I.—Seniors Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI), Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) and Cynthia Gaudet (Coventry, RI) helped lead Rhode Island College past Baruch, 69-54, in NCAA Div. III Women’s Basketball Tournament First Round action played at The Murray Center on Friday evening.

 

The Anchorwomen (25-3) advance to face Emmanuel (23-6) tomorrow night in NCAA Second Round action (7 p.m.). The Saints defeated Hartwick (22-6), 68-61, in the other first round game played earlier this evening. Baruch (19-10) sees its season come to an end in the loss.

 

RIC, the 2012 Little East Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, wins its first NCAA Tournament game in 27 years (1985). Looking ahead to tomorrow night, Emmanuel was one of only three teams to defeat Rhode Island College this winter, handing the Anchorwomen an 81-73 setback on Dec. 1. After the loss, RIC won a school-record 17 games.

Coro posted a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds, while Gaudet finished with 14 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Riley notched a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards, while Donovan added seven points and five rebounds off the bench. Junior Courtney Burns (Rockland, MA) tallied eight points and five rebounds in the win, while senior guard Nicole Girard (Foster, RI) three points and a game-high five assists.

 

 "Once we battled through the early game emotions, our defense locked in where we needed it to be," RIC Head Coach Marcus Reilly said. "In addition, each of our regulars stepped up big at some point within our offense and really pushed the lead to a comfortable place. Katie Donovan was huge for us off the bench again tonight."

 

The first six minutes of the opening half saw Baruch leading by three points, 15-12, with 14:18 remaining. A jumper by freshman forward Katie Donovan (Hudson, NH) put the Anchorwomen on top, 16-15, at 12:12 and RIC outscored the visitors, 25-9, for the rest of the stanza and posted a 41-24 halftime lead.

RIC shot 42 percent (16-for-38) from the field, 42 percent (5-for-12) from downtown and out-rebounded the Bearcats, 27-24, in the first half. Baruch shot just 29 percent (10-for-35) from the field. RIC made six steals and forced eight turnovers.

 

Baruch failed to mount a serious challenge in the second half as the Anchorwomen never led by less than 10 points. The hosts built a game-high lead of 26 points midway through the second frame before the starters gave way to the reserve corps.

Senior forward Folashade Akinde (Homewood, IL) registered 11 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman guard Francess Henry (Brooklyn, NY) recorded 10 points and five boards. Junior guard Jessica Duleba (Commerce Twp., MI) chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

 

The Anchorwomen shot 43 percent (27-for-63) from the field in the win, including 8-of-16 shooting (50 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Meanwhile, the Bearcats shot just 29 percent (18-for-62) from the floor.
