PELOQUIN NETS ANCHORWOMEN’S LONE
GOAL IN, 5-1, LOSS TO WORCESTER STATE

Worcester, Mass.-Sophomore forward Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, RI) scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute to give Rhode Island College an early lead, but Worcester State erupted for five straight goals en route to a 5-1 victory in the season-opening game for both clubs.

The Lancers (1-0) held a 37-2 advantage in shots and also led in corner kicks, 9-2. RIC (0-1) sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) made a career-high 14 saves in the loss (0-1), surpassing her previous high mark by one. WSU sophomore keeper Danielle Grunbaum (Marlboro, MA) did not have to make a save en route to her first victory (1-0) of the 2012 campaign.

 

Worcester State senior forward Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, MA) tied the game in the 58th minute and put the hosts on top for good nine minutes later. Junior striker Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) put up back-to-back goals in the 78th and 81st minute, respectively, while sophomore forward Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, MA) capped the afternoon’s offensive output with a marker in the 82nd minute.

Sophomore midfielder Cassie Giardina (Pittsfield, MA) contributed two assists on the day.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Springfield on Tuesday, Sept. 4 (6 p.m.).
