ANCHORWOMEN CLIP GORDON, 6-3,
FOR FIRST WIN OF 2012

Wenham, Mass.-Freshman Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) won at No. 1 singles, sophomore Janice Wang (Branchburg, NJ) earned a victory at fourth singles and the pair combined for a victory at the top doubles spot to lead the Rhode Island College women's tennis team to their first victory of the 2012 season with a 6-3 win at Gordon.

Both competitors dispatched their opponents in straight sets with Campanella (6-2, 6-1) and Wang (6-4, 6-2) opening with an 8-2 decision in doubles. Sophomore Gianna Vallante (Coventry, RI) and classmate Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) won (8-4) at second doubles. The Gordon duo of sophomore Hannah Damon (Mystic, CT) and classmate Rachel Kauffman (Harleysville, PA) picked up an 8-6 win at No. 3.

RIC (1-4) took a 2-1 lead into singles action as Campanella, freshman Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI), Wang and Vallante all won their matches to seal the victory. Gordon senior captain Sarah Hickey (Stony Brook, NY) battled to a close (6-4, 7-5) victory at No. 2 singles and sophomore Eva Kenna (Harvard, MA) cruised to a (6-3, 6-1) win at No. 5.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference play at home against UMass Boston on Saturday, Sept. 15 (1 p.m.).
