BRENDAN CASEY JOINS RIC WRESTLING STAFF

Providence, RI—Rhode Island College has named Brendan Casey as an assistant wrestling coach. He will assist Head Coach Jay Jones will all facets of the wrestling program including recruiting, scouting, administering practices and meet coaching.

 

“It’s an honor to be coaching with two former Rhode Island College wrestling alums,” said Casey. “I’m looking forward to a successful season both competitively and academically.”

 

 

 

“I am really proud to bring back one of the great stories in Rhode Island College wrestling history with regard to Brendan Casey,” said Jones. ”Individually, he was an Academic All-American, was All- New England and had an amazing 3.8 GPA. But perhaps his best quality was his leadership as a captain acting as an extension of the coaching staff, holding the guys in line and example setting in both work ethic and behavior.  He has high expectations for everyone and I am looking forward to having everyone from the staff, to the captains and to the student-athletes adhere to these high standards.”

 

A three-year member of the RIC wrestling program, the Lowell, Mass. native finished his career at Rhode Island College with a 46-25 (.648) record to go along with 139 takedowns, 22 reversals, 66 escapes, 15 near-falls and four pins.

 

As a senior in 2007-08, he earned All-New England honors, placing third 174 lbs. at the N.E. Championships. Casey wrapped up his season with a 22-9 record to go along with 69 takedowns, five reversals, 28 escapes, three near-falls and two pins. He was named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and was an Honorable Mention to the Pilgrim Wrestling League All-Star Team, as well as a Pilgrim League Scholar-Athlete.

 

 

 

As a junior in 2006-07, Casey was named to the Pilgrim Wrestling League’s Scholar-Athlete Team. He was 20-9 at 174 lbs. with 53 takedowns, 12 reversals, 29 escapes, nine near-falls and two pins.

 

Casey earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and health education from Rhode Island College in 2011. He currently teaches elementary physical education and resides in Cumberland, R.I.
