GONSALVES NOTCHES GOAL & AN ASSIST
AS UMASS DARTMOUTH INCREASES
SHUTOUT STREAK

Providence, R.I.-Sophomore midfielder Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, MA) finished with a goal and an assist to pace the UMass Dartmouth women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Rhode Island College in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Soccer Field.

With the shutout victory, UMass Dartmouth (8-1-1, 3-0 LEC) has not allowed a goal since Sept. 15, a remarkable 495-minute span of stifling defense. Meanwhile, Rhode Island College falls to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in Little East Conference play.

The Corsairs quickly took a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of action after junior midfielder Jordan Lipner-Riza (Worcester, MA) took a pass from junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI) and lofted a shot from the corner over the head of RIC goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) and into the back of the net for her second of the year.

Moments later, UMD tacked on another goal in the eighth minute when Gonsalves picked up her eighth of the year, spearheaded by a nice feed from senior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA).

The Corsairs added one more goal in the waning seconds of the first half after sophomore defender Tess Stapleton (Brockton, MA) blasted a shot from the center of the box that bounced off the hands of Maia and trickled into the back of the net. Gonsalves was credited with the assist for her team-leading 20th point of the season.

Neither team could get on the scoreboard in the second half as the defensive intensity from both squads continued to increase throughout the course of the game.

In the end, the Corsairs outshot RIC, 22-6, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Maia (1-7) made seven saves in the losing effort, while UMD junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA) improved her record to 8-1-1 with the win, making three saves along the way.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hits the road to face Becker on Wednesday, Oct. 3 (4 p.m.). Meanwhile, UMass Dartmouth travels to Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Oct. 2 (7 p.m.).
