CABRAL & BOYER LEAD ANCHORWOMEN PAST EASTERN NAZARENE, 3-1

Quincy, Mass.-Senior outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) posted a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 15 digs, while junior middle hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) recorded 13 kills and 11 digs, as the Rhode Island College women's volleyball team cruised by Eastern Nazarene, 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-14, 26-24) on Thursday evening at the Lahue Physical Education Center

 

The Anchorwomen (8-11) win for the fifth time in the club's last six matches. ENC (10-11) drops to below .500 in the loss.

 

Senior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) dished out 36 assists to go along with three kills and seven digs. Freshman right side hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) contributed eight kills and six digs, while classmate libero Jasmyn Starr (Gilford, NH) registered 13 digs.

 

Dana Day (Coarsegold, CA) and Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, WV) each posted 10 kills on the night for the hosts. Leann Williams (Oxford, PA) added seven kills while Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, MA) chipped in with six. Birdina Tuiava (Colorado Springs, CO) racked up 29 assists and nine digs.

 

The Anchorwomen grabbed an early 8-4 lead in the opening set but the Lions roared back to tie the frame at 11-11. Eastern Nazarene continued with three straight points to claim a 14-11 advantage.

 

The Lions closed out the first set 25-20 to own a 1-0 lead at the start of the second stanza. Rhode Island College knotted the match at a set apiece with a 25-17 victory in the second set.

 

The Anchorwomen jumped ahead 2-1 as they captured a 25-14 win in the third set. The fourth set was closely contested as the frame featured nine ties and five lead changes. Eastern Nazarene tacked on five of the first seven points to sport a 5-2 edge. Rhode Island College answered with a 5-0 run to go ahead 7-5.

 

 The Lions pulled even with the Anchorwomen at 18-18 after recording five-unanswered points. The hosts claimed a one-point lead at 20-19 and expanded the margin to 22-20 before Rhode Island College posted three-consecutive points to earn a 23-22 lead.

 

 The visitors fought off set-point at 24-23 to tie the score 24-24. The Anchorwomen tallied the final three points of the match to secure their eighth win of the season.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at home against Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 9 (7 p.m.).
