MILLER & McGREGOR LEAD WESTFIELD STATE TO, 6-0, WIN OVER ANCHORWOMEN
Owls Shutout Streak Reaches Seven Games

Providence, R.I.–Senior forward Kayley Miller (Ludlow, MA) finished with a pair of goals, while senior forward Brittanie McGregor (Ludlow, MA) added a goal and two assists, to lead the Westfield State women’s soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the RIC Soccer Field.

 

Westfield State improves to 14-0-1 with the win, extending its winning streak to 10 games and its streak of consecutive shutouts to seven games. Rhode Island College falls to 2-10.

 

The Owls jumped on the board in the 12th minute when McGregor found Miller for the game’s first score. Moments later, sophomore forward Colie Sambrook (Naugatuck, CT) found the back of the net in the 16th minute to put the visitors up by two.

 

Westfield State added another score in the 20th minute after senior defender Colleen Bazinet (Charlton, MA) dished to McGregor and gave the Owls a 3-0 lead.

 

After 40 minutes of scoreless action and an impressive stretch of defense from the Anchorwomen, Westfield State tacked on the first score of the second half in the 60th minute when Miller registered her second strike of the game and her team-high 18th goal. The Owls struck again immediately on the ensuing possession as sophomore midfielder Ashleigh Chretien (North Attleboro, MA) found the back of the net just 22 seconds later to give Westfield State a commanding, 5-0, lead.

 

Junior midfielder Courtney Wood (Whitinsville, MA) notched the game’s final score in the 88th minute to send the Owls to the, 6-0, victory.

 

Along with outstanding efforts from Miller and McGregor, Westfield State was led by Bazinet, who finished with a pair of assists, while sophomore forward Maggie Kerr (Shrewsbury, MA) added an assist off the bench as well.

 

Freshman forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) and freshman midfielder Ryley Slater (West Warwick, RI) each finished with a shot on goal to highlight RIC’s afternoon on offense.

 

Westfield State outshot the Anchorwomen, 34-7, throughout the match, which included a 22-1 differential at the conclusion of the first half. The Owls also held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.

 

Sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) dropped to 2-10 with the loss, making eight saves along the way. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashlyn Cleary (Tiverton, MA) made one save and allowed one goal in five minutes of action as well.

 

On the other end, junior goalkeeper Jess Habif (Natick, MA) improved her record to 13-0-1 with the win. She was replaced at the half by sophomore goalkeeper Nicky Stasz (Easthampton, MA), who made a pair of saves in 45 minutes of action.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Plymouth State on Saturday, Oct. 20 (4:30 p.m.).
