RIC SWEEPS TRI-MATCH WITH SHUTOUT WINS OVER ST. JOSEPH’S AND SOUTHERN MAINE
Boyer Knocks Down 30 Kills in Two, 3-0, Victories

Providence, R.I.–Senior middle hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) hit .410 with 30 kills, seven aces and 13 digs as Rhode Island College swept a tri-match with, 3-0, victories over Southern Maine and St. Joseph’s (ME) at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Anchorwomen (11-14, 2-3 LEC) helped their quest for a 2012 Little East Conference Tournament berth (top six) with the opening victory over the Huskies (9-18, 0-6 LEC). St. Joseph’s (19-6) swept USM, 3-0, in the other match and RIC closed out the day with a 3-0 win over the Monks.

Junior outside hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) also had a strong match by hitting .300 to go along with 19 kills, five aces and 18 digs. Freshman right side hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) built on her strong play as of late by contributing 13 kills and four digs. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) contributed 13 winners, while senior setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) handed out 76 assists.

 

The hosts opened with a convincing, 20-13, victory in the first set vs. the Huskies. USM led, 10-8, in the second set before RIC rattled off eight straight points to win, 25-16. The Anchorwomen closed out the match with a 25-15 win in the final set. Boyer was credited with 14 kills, three aces and six digs. Ho set up 33 winners, while Cabral posted eight kills, three aces and seven digs.

Senior middle blocker Krista Keene (Gorham, ME) had seven kills, while junior outside hitter Madlyn Terry (Kennebunkport, ME) contributed seven winners. Sophomore setter Nicole Hansen (Biddeford, ME) posted 18 assists.

 

After dispatching the Huskies, St. Joseph’s looked to slow down RIC in the afternoon’s final match, but RIC outlasted the Monks, 25-21, in each of the first two frames before winning, 25-19, in the last stanza. Boyer (16), Cabral (11) and Palazzini (11) all recorded double-digit efforts in kills, while freshman libero Jasmyn Starr (Gilford, NH) led the way with 13 digs.

Senior middle blocker Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, ME) led the way for SJC with 11 kills, while freshman middle blocker Felicia Wachowiak (Milton, NH) was credited with nine. Senior setter Kiah Begley (Berwick, ME) handed out 43 assists.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 23 (6 p.m.).
