RIC Snaps 13-Game LEC Winless Streak

Plymouth, N.H.-Freshman forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) scored twice and assisted on another as Rhode Island College defeated Plymouth State, 3-1, in Little East Conference women’s soccer action played at Panther Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Anchorwomen (3-10, 1-5 LEC) notched their first Little East win since downing Southern Maine, 2-1, on Oct. 23, 2010, a span of 13 league contests. More importantly, RIC remains in the hunt for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming 2012 Little East Tournament, which begins on Oct. 30. The Anchorwomen will need to defeat Southern Maine, which is also 1-5, next Saturday in order to continue their season.

Sophomore midfielder Megan Saucier (Freetown, MA) rang a shot of the cross bar late in the half as the visitors went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

RIC got off to a hot start in the 49th minute as Turner set up sophomore forward Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, RI) for her team-leading sixth strike of the season. Cassie Todd scored for PSU in the 65th minute, but Turner sealed the win by converting a pass from freshman midfielder Chelsea Combs (Ashford, CT) with just 30 seconds left in the game for her fourth of the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) made 11 saves to earn the win (3-10), while PSU’s Hannah Kimball made three saves in a losing effort (0-2).
