BUTLER LEADS BY A STROKE AS ANCHORMEN FINISH DAY ONE OF GNAC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN FIRST PLACE

Sutton, Mass.-Sophomore Ryan Butler (Windham, NH) carded a 76 (+4) to lead a field of 45 golfers as Rhode Island College finished first after the first round of the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships played at Blackstone National Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Anchormen, who are looking to win their second consecutive league championship and secure a berth in the 2012 NCAA Div. III Men’s Golf Championships, posted a 316 (+28) team score and hold a seven-stroke lead over second place Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth (323; +35).

Freshman Jonathan Cooper (Berkley, MA) also had a great round, tying for second with a 77 (+5) and sitting one back from Butler, the 2011 GNAC Player and Rookie of the Year.

 

Junior Tim Leigh (Somerset, MA) is tied for 11th (81; +9), sophomore Patrick Ford (Halifax, MA) is tied for 13th (82; +10) and senior Kyle Harper (Rehoboth, MA) is tied for 19th (83; +11) to round out the RIC contingent.

 

Round two will begin tomorrow morning.
