GABRIELLE TURNER NAMED LITTLE EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Providence, R.I.-Freshman forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) was named the Little East Conference Womenís Soccer Rookie of the Week for her performance in a 1-1 week for the Anchorwomen.

 

In a crucial LEC contest against Plymouth State on Saturday, Turner helped keep RICís playoff hopes alive with a pair of goals and an assist in a 3-1 win over the Panthers. She broke the deadlock by netting her third score of the season in the 25th minute and then set up sophomore forward Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, RI) in the 49th minute to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

 

 

 

 

 

 

After PSU notched a goal in the 65th minute to cut the deficit to one, Turner added one more score in the final minute of action to seal the victory. For the season, Turner has played in 13 games, starting 11 of them and has tallied four goals and a team-leading five assists for a team-high 13 points.

 

 

 

With Saturdayís win, the Anchorwomen (3-10, 1-5 LEC) notched their first Little East win since downing Southern Maine, 2-1, on Oct. 23, 2010, a span of 13 league contests. More importantly, RIC remains in the hunt for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming 2012 Little East Tournament, which begins on Oct. 30.

 

 

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Southern Maine on Saturday, Oct. 27 (1 p.m.).
