2012 Rhode Island College Women’s Tennis
Season Summary

(4-10 Overall; 4-4 in the Little East Conference)

 

Providence, R.I.-First-year Head Coach Adam Spring’s team finished the 2012 season with a 4-10 record overall and a 4-4 (fifth place) mark in Little East Conference play.

 

 

 

The fifth-seeded Anchorwomen qualified for the Little East Conference Tournament for the first time since 2009, but were defeated by fourth-seeded Plymouth State, 5-2, in the quarterfinals on Oct. 16 in their final match of the season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sophomore Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) was 5-8 (.385) at No. 2 singles and 4-10 (.286) at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles for 7.0 points on the season. She finished the season tied for second on the team in doubles victories.

 

 

 

Sophomore Gianna Vallante (Coventry, RI) was 4-7 (.363) at No. 6 singles and finished 3-10 (.230) at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for 5.5 points.

 

 

 

Sophomore Janice Wang (Branchburg, NJ) was named team MVP. She was 11-3 (.786) at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 singles and 5-8 (.385) at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for a team-high 13.5 points on the season. Wang was one of two Anchorwomen to record a victory in their Little East Conference Tournament match against Plymouth State. She dominated in LEC play on the season, as she registered a 6-1 record in singles flights against LEC opponents. Wang led the team in singles wins and was second on the squad in doubles victories.

 

 

 

Freshman Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) was named the 2012 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year. She was 7-6 (.538) at No. 1 singles and 6-8 (.429) at No. 1 doubles for 10.0 points. She led the Anchorwomen in doubles victories, ranked second on the team in points and finished third on the team in singles wins. She was named the league’s Rookie of the Week twice on the season.

 

 

 

Freshman Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) was 9-4 (.692) at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, while finishing 1-4 (.200) at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for 9.5 points on the season. Cannata was one of two Anchorwomen to record a victory in their Little East Conference Tournament match against Plymouth State. She was outstanding in LEC play on the season, as she posted a 5-1 record in singles flights against LEC opponents. Cannata ranked second on the team in singles victories and finished third on the team in points.

 

 

 

Freshman Alyssa Diaz (Cranston, RI) was 0-3 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and 3-5 (.375) at No. 3 doubles for 1.5 points.

 

 

 

Freshman Sarah Goodwin (Greenville, RI) finished 3-10 (.230) at No. 3 and No. 4 singles and 4-9 at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for 5.0 points. She finished the season tied for second on the team in doubles victories.

 

 

 

Freshman Shannon Laiho (West Greenwich, RI) was 0-3 at No. 3 doubles.

 

 

 

Freshman Jessica Rieman (South Weymouth, MA) was 0-1 at No. 6 singles and went 0-1 at No. 3 doubles.
