SOUTHERN MAINE ENDS RICíS SEASON, 2-1
Huskies Head to Little East Tournament

Providence, R.I.-Freshman midfielder Brooke Lawrence (Lisbon Falls, ME) scored in the 21st minute, and senior midfielder Cathy Wise (Cape Elizabeth, ME) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute, as Southern Maine defeated Rhode Island College, 2-1, to capture the sixth and final spot in the upcoming 2012 Little East Conference Womenís Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Soccer Field.

The Huskies (3-13, 2-5 LEC) and Anchorwomen (3-11, 1-6 LEC) had each defeated Plymouth State on the season to set up the regular season finale. Southern Maine will advance to first round action of the leagueís postseason tournament, which begins on Tuesday, Oct. 30. RIC ends its season with the loss.

Senior Sarah Fagan and her family were recognized prior to the start of the game.

RIC held an 18-11 advantage in shots and carried the play for a good portion of the first half. USM got on the board first when sophomore defender Nicole Bordeau (Sanford, ME) took a free kick about 25 yards out. Her shot deflected off an Anchorwoman defender and went right to Lawrence who punched in her first of the year.

The Huskies scored one more time before the half expired on what began as a harmless scoring chance. Freshman midfielder Michaela Despins (Gray, ME) took possession of the ball near the top of the 18-yard box and slid a pass to Wise on her left. Wise fired a shot that seemed to be heading past the far post, but its trajectory carried it over the head of RIC sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) and into the top right corner.

Late in the game, the hosts ramped up the offensive intensity with their season on the line. With 19 minutes left in the game, junior defender Lauren Bartlett (Coventry, RI) knocked down a USM clearing attempt inside the visitorís territory, fought her way through a number of defenders with a tremendous individual effort and walked in alone against senior goalkeeper Katie Cobb (Lewiston, ME). Bartlett aimed for the far post, but her shot carried wide to keep it a two-goal deficit.

RIC got on the board with 6:12 left in the game after the Huskies were whistled for a foul in the box on an Anchorwomen corner kick. Sophomore Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, RI) took the penalty kick and buried her team-leading seventh of the season.

Southern Maine was able to keep the ball pinned deep in the far corner of RICís side of the field to bleed precious minutes off the clock and hold on for the win.

Maia (3-11) and Cobb (2-5) each made five saves in the game.
