Springfield, Mass.-In their first home match of the spring season, the Springfield College men's tennis team downed visiting Rhode Island College, 9-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Appleton Courts in non-conference action.


After a week in Puerto Rico for its Spring Break, the Pride returned home to improve to 5-3 on the year with the victory, while Rhode Island College falls to 1-1.


Springfield took all three doubles matches, with sophomore Alex Orban (Milford, CT) and junior Joe Gianelli (Watertown, CT) cruising to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.


In the singles competition, the Pride took all six matches in straight sets. Sophomore Kyle Mersereau (Brunswick, ME) prevailed at the top spot for Springfield (6-1, 7-5), while sophomore Ben Burnap (Westerly, RI) snagged the win at No. 2 (6-0, 6-2).


Giannelli produced a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles and Orban took No. 4 by the score of 6-1, 6-3. Senior Zac Goldstein (Shelton, CT) added a win at No. 5 singles (6-3, 7-5) and sophomore Cody Rodrigues (Westfield, MA) captured No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts Emerson College on Friday, March 29 (3:30 p.m.).
