FIVE-RUN EIGHTH KEYS, 9-4, WIN FOR WILDCATS

Providence, R.I.-Senior center fielder James Reyes (Providence, RI) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, a home run and a stolen base to lead Johnson & Wales to a 9-4 win over Rhode Island College at Anchorman Field on Monday afternoon.

The first three innings saw RIC (6-18) sophomore starter Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) and JWU (16-8) freshman Gian Bianchi (Johnston, RI) keep the respective opposition off the scoreboard.

The Anchormen finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore right fielder Dean Grasso (Cranston, RI) reached on an error and promptly stole second. Freshman catcher Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) then crushed a triple to deep left center field to bring in Grasso. Sophomore left fielder Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Foley and make it a 2-0 ballgame.

The Wildcats put four runs up on the board in the top of the fifth as freshman designated hitter Mark Kerwin (Smithfield, RI) worked a walk and junior third baseman Tyler Pacheco (East Hampstead, NH) smacked a long single off the left center field wall.  The pair moved up a station after a balk call and Kerwin then trotted home on an Anchormen error. Reyes made RIC pay with three-run bomb (1) to left.

The Wildcats were able to put the game out of reach with five runs in the eighth .Reyes gave the visitors an important insurance run to start the frame after he singled through the hole into left field, stole second and then came home on freshman left fielder Tom Elkow’s (Morganville, NJ) hard single to left. Junior shortstop Alex Pezzuto (Hastings, NY) contributed a sacrifice fly to bring in Elkow and Kerwin brought in two with a bases loaded single through the right side. Freshman third baseman Justin Pilarski (Garnet Valley, PA) capped the frame with an RBI fielder’s choice.

RIC got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth as senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) singled up the middle and came across on senior center fielder Kevin Carey’s (Wakefield, RI) triple down the right field line. Carey then scored on a Grasso RBI ground out.

Bianchi picked up the win (2-1), allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work. Cummiskey took the loss (0-4), allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
