Boston, Mass.-Junior Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) was victorious at No. 1 singles, but it wasn’t enough for Rhode Island College, as the Anchormen fell to UMass Boston, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts. 


Senior Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, MA) and junior Charles Lai (Boston, MA) extended their combined winning streak to 18 matches as UMass Boston improved to 8-3 overall with a 3-0 record in Little East Conference play. Rhode Island College falls to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.


Junior Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, MA) and junior Seth Shavers (Boston, MA) gave UMB an early 1-0 lead, with an 8-2 victory over junior Matt Collins (Rumford, RI) and freshman Cory Norberg (Pawtucket, RI) at No. 3 doubles. Lai and Loyer made it, 2-0, Beacons, with an 8-2 victory over sophomore Michael McCaffrey (Cumberland, RI) and junior Ted James (West Greenwich, RI) at No. 2 doubles. UMass Boston earned the sweep of doubles, when senior Sean Cullen (Medfield, MA) and sophomore David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) combined for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.


Loyer extended his red hot streak to eight straight singles victories, with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over McCaffrey at No. 3 singles. UMass Boston then secured the victory when Lai swept through his match with James (6-1, 6-1) at No. 4 singles. 


Shavers kept things going for UMB at No. 5 singles, with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Collins and Hernandez added another point with a 6-4, 6-3 win over freshman Benjamin Proctor (Cumberland, RI) in No. 2 singles. Bizhoti capped off the Beacons strong day with straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over Norberg.


Rhode Island College earned their only point of the day at No. 1 singles, as Werchadlo outlasted Cullen 7-6, 6-4. 


 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hits the road to face UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday (3 p.m.) in Little East action.
