COLONIALS EDGE ANCHORWOMEN

Danbury, Conn.-Despite a four-hit performance at the dish from senior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT), the Rhode Island College softball team dropped both ends of a Little East Conference doubleheader with Western Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon at Westside Field.

The Colonials (12-16, 6-2 LEC) upended the Anchorwomen (14-14, 4-2 LEC) in the first contest of the day, 3-0, and followed with a 2-1 victory in the second game of the day.

In game one, Western freshman starting pitcher Emily Cintorino (Bristol, CT) dazzled in the pitching circle for the Colonials en route to her fifth career complete game and her fourth win of the season (4-5). The right-hander scattered just four hits and three walks through seven shutout innings, while striking out four.

The Colonials manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning off of RIC senior starting pitcher Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) to take an early 2-0 lead. After the hosts opened the frame with back-to-back singles, senior left fielder Ashlie Morris (Wolcott, CT) ripped an RBI single that plated freshman pinch runner Candace Lawrence (West Haven, CT). Moments later, freshman right fielder Michaela Roche (Bristol, RI) came around to score on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Western tacked on another run after senior center fielder Corinna Hussey (Naugatuck, CT) managed to steal home with two outs in the frame to make it, 3-0.

Johnson kept the Colonials off the scoreboard for the rest of the way, but it wasn’t enough as the right-hander dropped to 7-3 on the season. Johnson conceded three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out a pair.

In the second game of the day, the Colonials again jumped out to the early, 2-0, lead after notching a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings against RIC senior starting pitcher Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI). Western scratched its first run of the game when sophomore pinch runner Christine Bighinatti (Rocky Hill, CT) scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore shortstop Erin Biskup (Poughkeepsie, NY). In the fourth, Biskup struck again as her RBI single to left center field plated sophomore first baseman Julia Bocek (Southington, CT) for the second run of the game.

The Anchorwomen answered back to score their first and only run of the day in the top of the fifth inning when Jandreau laced an RBI single up the middle to score sophomore shortstop Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, CT).

RIC had no answer for either of Western’s pitchers in game two, as junior right-hander Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, CT) and freshman right-hander Alexandra Sabith (Meriden, CT) combined to stymie the Anchorwomen en route to the sweep of the twin bill. In 4.1 innings of work, Moss allowed the lone run and gave up seven hits and one walk in the win (3-3), while Sabith surrendered just one hit and struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

On the other end, Borden was solid for RIC in a losing effort (3-2), as she gave up just two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out one.

Jandreau went 4-for-7 with a double and one RBI to pace RIC at the dish, while Sykora, sophomore third baseman Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT) and junior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) each finished with two hits apiece.

Biskup led the way for Western as she finished 2-for-6 with two RBI and a stolen base, while Bocek went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hits the road to face Westfield State in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 18 (3:30 p.m.).
