Danbury, Conn.-Junior Matt Collins (Rumford, RI) picked up a pair of victories to help lead the Rhode Island College menís tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Western Connecticut at Westside Courts on Wednesday in Little East Conference action.


Rhode Island College improves to 2-9 on the year with a 1-3 record in LEC play, while Western Connecticut falls to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in conference action.


The Colonials took an early 2-1 lead following the conclusion of the three doubles matches. Collins and sophomore Michael McCaffrey (Cumberland, RI) recorded the lone win for RIC at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, while junior Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) and freshman Benjamin Proctor (Cumberland, RI) came up just short at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (9-7).

The Anchormen stormed through four of the six singles flights to pull away with the, 5-4, victory over Western. Werchadlo paced RIC with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, while junior Ted James (West Greenwich, RI) earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. Collins cruised past his opponent to pick up his second victory of the day at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-0) to help propel the Anchormen, while Proctor rounded out the scoring for the visitors with a forfeit win at No. 2 singles.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College hosts Salem State at the RIC Tennis Courts in Little East Conference action on Friday, April 25 (3 p.m.).
