SALEM STATE SWEEPS SINGLES TO DEFEAT
RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE, 7-2

Providence, R.I.-Salem State bounced back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles to sweep all six singles matches and defeat Rhode Island College, 7-2, in Little East Conference men's tennis action played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.

 

Senior Joe Kim (Seoul, South Korea) and classmate Kenny Hodgkins (Winthrop, MA) combined for an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles, while earning straight set victories at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-3) and No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-1) to lead the Vikings (3-10, 2-4 LEC).

 

The Anchormen (2-10, 1-4 LEC) got off to a good start as junior Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) and freshman Ben Proctor (Cumberland, RI) earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Ted James (West Greenwich, RI) and freshman Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI) scored an 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles.

 

Salem State responded with the decisive wins in singles action. Senior Matt Lee (Pembroke, MA) took three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) in his match with Werchadlo, while the remaining five contests were settled in two sets.

 

Freshman Tyler Seidel (Suffield, CT) won at No. 3 (6-3, 7-5), senior Krystian Biedul (Podkowa Lesinas, Poland) won at No. 4 (6-1, 6-3) and freshman Conor Erickson (Hubbardston, MA) rounded out the wins at No. 6 (6-2, 6-0).

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at home against Southern Maine on Saturday, April 27 (1 p.m.).
