ANCHORWOMEN'S TITLE HOPES COME UP SHORT
Western Connecticut Wins, 1-0

Mansfield, Conn.-Western Connecticut freshman pitcher Alle Sabith (Meriden, CT) recorded a five-hit shutout to defeat fifth-seeded Rhode Island College, 1-0, in the Championship Game of the 2013 Little East Conference Softball Tournament played at Eastern Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.

The Anchorwomen (23-23) ran off four straight wins at the tourney after falling to second-seeded Plymouth State on Thursday afternoon, including a 6-0 win over the third-seeded Colonials earlier today, which forced the decisive title contest.

Western (23-22) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore first baseman Julia Bocek (Southington, CT) drew a leadoff walk and was lifted for freshman pinch-runner Brittany Virgulto (Meriden, CT). A sacrifice bunt moved Virgulto up to second and she advanced to third on junior pinch hitter Kylee Ruther's (Stamford, CT) single up the middle.  The Colonials took a 1-0 lead as Sabith smacked an RBI single to right center field.

Rhode Island College mounted its most serious comeback bid in the top of the seventh. Junior pitcher Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) and freshman left fielder Abigail Francis (Worcester, MA) walked to put runners on first and second. Senior right fielder Jessica Borden (Lincoln, RI) grounded out to move the runners to second and third.

Sophomore shortstop Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, CT) then grounded back to Sabith, who gunned down Sylvestre at the plate for the second out. Sabith secured the win by getting senior second baseman Marisa Jandreau (Plainville, CT) to foul out to end the game.

Sabith earned her 13th (13-7) win of the season, striking out four in a complete game effort. Sylvestre took the loss (8-7), allowing the lone run on six hits to go along with one strikeout.

RIC junior center fielder Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss.
