SILAS MURRAY TAKES FIRST AT 133 LBS. AS ANCHORMEN PLACE FOURTH AT ROGER WILLIAMS INVITATIONAL

Bristol, R.I.-Junior 133 lbs. Silas Murray (Brentwood, NY) went 4-0 and won his weight class as the Rhode Island College wrestling team opened the 2012-13 season with a fourth place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Anchormen had six wrestlers place in the top six of their respective weight classes. Messiah (223.0), Roger Williams (222.5) and Johnson & Wales (209.5) finished ahead of RIC (124.5) in the 10-team field.

Murray picked up a pin on the day and defeated Wesleyan's Christopher Siracusa, 6-1, in the finals.

 

Junior Jonathan Murray (Brentwood, NY) also reached the finals of the 125 lbs. weight class and earned a second place finish with a 2-1 mark. Murray lost to Sam Shames from MIT in the finals.

 

Junior Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) won the most matches on the day, going 5-1 to place third at 285 lbs. He opened by going 1-1, then rattled off four consecutive victories, which culminated with a 3-0 decision over Messiah's Evan Canady.

Senior Mike Sugermeyer (Hamden, MA) went 4-1 at 125 lbs. to eventually place third overall. Sugermeyer won his first two matches with pins before falling to Shames. He rebounded with a major and then downed RWU's Anthony D'Anton, 8-6, to claim third.

 

Junior Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) went 3-3 to place sixth at 149 lbs., while freshman Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) posted a 4-3 mark at 141 lbs. to finish sixth.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at the 2012 Doug Parker Invitational, hosted by Springfield on Saturday, Nov. 17 (10 a.m.).
