SUGERMEYER & BARRUCCI HELP
ANCHORMEN FLEECE GOLDEN BEARS, 27-15

Providence, R.I.-Led by senior captain Mike Sugermeyer’s (Hampden, MA) technical fall victory at 125 lbs., the Rhode Island College wrestling team rattled off six straight wins to open their match against Western New England University en route to a 27-15 victory over the Golden Bears in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action on Friday night.

 

The Anchormen (2-0), ranked fifth in New England, jumped out to an early, 11-0, lead over 10th-ranked Western New England (1-1) after sophomore 285 lbs. Richard Broderick (Roslindale, MA) won by forfeit and Sugermeyer picked up a reversal and five back points in the final seconds of his bout against freshman Stephen Colling (Stoughton, MA) to earn the technical fall victory at 6:50.

Junior Silas Murray (Brentwood, NY) and freshman Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) followed with a major and a decision at 133 lbs. and 141 lbs., respectively, before senior Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, CT) pinned sophomore Robert Cox (Latham, NY) to give Rhode Island College a commanding, 24-0, lead.

 

With a chance to close out the Golden Bears, junior Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) stepped in an earned a hard-fought, 4-3, comeback victory at 157 lbs. over senior Nik Moreschi (Meriden, CT) to give RIC a 27-0 lead and seal the victory for the Anchormen. After falling behind, 3-1, Barrucci picked up an escape and a clutch takedown in the third period to knock off Moreschi. 

 

Western New England finished strong despite the deficit, as the visitors picked up a trio of decisions and a forfeit victory at 174 lbs. to close out the match. Freshman Zach Bantle (Adams, MA) won, 8-6, at 165 lbs., senior Tom Caliento (Longmeadow, MA) earned a 10-4 decision at 184 lbs. and sophomore Dylan Kniska (Colchester, CT) picked up the, 6-2, win at 197 lbs. to pace the Golden Bears down the stretch.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue NEWA competition at Wesleyan tomorrow with Wilkes (1 p.m.).
