400-YARD MEDLEY RECORD FALLS AS ANCHORWOMEN
SPLIT AT WESTERN CONNECTICUT TRI-MEET

Danbury, Conn.-Freshman Marykate McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI), junior Sophie Kanno (Cranston, RI), freshman Emily Thompson (Cumberland, RI) and sophomore Abbie Leazes (Providence, RI) established a new program record in the 400-yard medley relay as Rhode Island College split a double dual meet hosted by Western Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.

 

The quartet placed first with a time of 4:27.29, to best the previous mark by 10 seconds. The Anchorwomen (3-4) defeated Western Connecticut, 81-41, but lost to Westfield State, 72-62. The Owls also defeated the hosts, 105-31.

McCutcheon won three events on the day, taking home the title in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.80), 100-yard freestyle (59.22) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.99).

 

Kanno won the 50-yard butterfly (30.14) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.22), while taking second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.69).

 

Leazes won the 400 IM (5:07.76) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:45.57), while placing third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.36).

 

Thompson won the 50-yard freestyle (27.90) and placed second in the 50-yard backstroke (31.86).

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Feb. 2 (11 a.m.).
