LABEEF & SUGERMEYER LEAD ANCHORMEN TO VICTORY OVER JOHNSON & WALES, 28-12,
ON SENIOR NIGHT

Providence, R.I.–Senior 149 lbs. Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, CT) and senior 125 lbs. Mike Sugermeyer (Hampden, MA) each picked up decisive victories for Rhode Island College on Senior Night to help the Anchormen knock off No. 22 Johnson & Wales, 28-12, at the RIC Recreation Center on Friday night in Pilgrim Wrestling League action.  

 

Rhode Island College, ranked seventh in New England, improves to 8-14 overall with a 1-0 record in Pilgrim League action. Johnson & Wales, ranked third in New England, falls to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in the Pilgrim League.

The two teams went back and forth to open the match, as the Anchormen and Wildcats exchanged major decisions in the first four bouts. Junior 174 lbs. Ken Dougherty (Lacy, NJ) and junior 197 lbs. Colin Lenhardt (Hayes, VA) won handily for Johnson & Wales, while junior 184 lbs. Adam Lynch (New Milford, CT) and junior 285 lbs. Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) each cruised to victory for Rhode Island College.

 

With the score knotted at eight, Sugermeyer, the second-ranked wrestler in New England at 125 lbs., gave the hosts an 11-8 advantage with a 10-5 decision over senior Joe Pronk (Marshfield, MA). The momentum continued in the direction of Rhode Island College as junior 133 lbs. Silas Murray (Brentwood, NY) and freshman 141 lbs. Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) each followed with major decisions to put the Anchormen on top, 19-8, with just three bouts remaining.

 

That’s when LaBeef stepped in and brought the crowd to its feet with a hard-fought, 11-6, decision over freshman Joey Gaccione (Highpoint, NJ), the third-ranked wrestler in New England at 149 lbs. LaBeef’s decision made it, 22-8, and sealed the victory for RIC with two bouts left.

 

Freshman Everet Desilets (Cranston, RI), the top-ranked wrestler in New England at 157 lbs., bounced back with a 15-3 major decision for the Wildcats, while junior 165 lbs. Josh Harrison (Mechanicville, NY) finished the evening with a win by injury default to close out the, 28-12, victory for the Anchormen.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College heads to Southern Maine for a Pilgrim Wrestling League tri-match with Roger Williams on Saturday, Feb. 9 (11 a.m.)
