ALEX LABEEF NAMED NEW ENGLAND WRESTLING ASSOCIATION &
PILGRIM LEAGUE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

Providence, R.I.-Rhode Island College senior 149 lbs. Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, CT) was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) and Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week for his decisive win that led the Anchormen to a 28-12 victory over cross-city rival Johnson & Wales on Feb. 1.

 

With the Anchormen up, 19-8, and three bouts remaining, LaBeef stepped in and brought the crowd to its feet with a hard-fought, 11-6, decision over freshman Joey Gaccione (Highpoint, NJ), the third-ranked wrestler in New England. LaBeef’s decision made it, 22-8, and sealed the victory for RIC with two bouts left.

 

 

 

For the season, he is 4-11 with 14 takedowns, eight reversals, 23 escapes, three near-falls and two pins.

 

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen are 8-14 overall, 5-4 against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opposition and 1-0 in the Pilgrim League.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Southern Maine on Saturday, Feb. 9 for a tri-match with the Huskies and Roger Williams University (11 a.m.).
