LEAZES & MCCUTCHEON EARN ALL-NEW ENGLAND
HONORS AS ANCHORWOMEN PLACE 10th
AT NEISDA CHAMPIONSHIPS

White River Junction, Vt.-Sophomore Abbie Leazes (Providence, RI) and freshman Marykate McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI) earned All-New England honors as Rhode Island College placed 10th (21 teams) at the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Upper Aquatic Center on Feb. 8-10.

 

The Anchorwomen, who established 14 new program records at the championships, totaled a team score of 390. Keene State won the title with a score of 1,593.

 

 

 Sophomore Abbie Leazes

 

Leazes placed third in the 400-yard IM with a school-record time of 4:51.48 to earn All-New England honors. She also broke her own mark with a 14th-place finish and a time of 2:25.93 in the 200-yard butterfly.

 

 

 Freshman Marykate McCutcheon

 

 McCutcheon placed third in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:00.43) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:21.30) to attain All-N.E. status. She also placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.81) with a new high mark.

 

The pair teamed up with junior Sophie Kanno (Cranston, RI) and freshman Emily Thompson (Cumberland, RI) to establish RIC records in the 200-yard freestyle relay (13th; 1:48.69), 400-yard medley relay (8th; 4:20.72), 200-yard medley relay (12th; 2:00.98) and the 800-yard relay (10th; 8:26.42).

Thompson established a trio of new RIC marks by finishing ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.27), ninth in the 50-yard butterfly (28.44) and 17th in the 50-yard backstroke (30.38).

 

Kanno broke records with a ninth-place effort in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.94) and in the preliminaries of the 100 IM (1:04.95).
