2012-13 Rhode Island College
Wrestling Season Summary

(11-15 Overall; 8-5 in the NEWA; 4-1 in the Pilgrim League)

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Jay Jones’ (Career record: 183-134-1; .577) Anchormen finished the 2012-13 season with an 11-15 overall record, an 8-5 mark against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opposition and a 4-1 (second place) mark in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.

 

The Anchormen fell just short of clinching the Pilgrim Wrestling League Championship after falling to Roger Williams, 19-18, in the title match on Feb. 23. Prior to that, Rhode Island College upset Johnson & Wales on Johnson & Wales, 28-12, on Feb. 1, then swept Bridgewater State, 49-6, and Coast Guard, 38-12, on Feb. 16 to set up the decisive title contest.

 

Rhode Island College had two wrestlers earn All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships on March 2-3 and eventually saw eight wrestlers earn Pilgrim League All-Star honors.

 

Earlier in the year, Rhode Island College went 2-2 and finished seventh at the NEWA Duals on Jan. 27, placed seventh (16 teams) at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17 and placed fourth (10 teams) at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10.

 

 

 

Senior Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, CT) closed out his three-year career at Rhode Island College with a 29-30 record (.492) to go along with 53 takedowns, 34 reversals, 69 escapes, 20 near-falls and seven pins.

 

As a senior in 2012-2013, LaBeef was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star. LaBeef went 9-14 at 149 lbs. with 17 takedowns, 15 reversals, 38 escapes, six near-falls and two pins on the season. He was named both the NEWA Wrestler of the Week and the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week after leading Rhode Island College to a 28-12 victory over perennial power Johnson & Wales on Feb. 1.

 

As a junior in 2011-2012, LaBeef went 10-7 at 141-149 lbs. to go along with 20 takedowns, eight reversals, 11 escapes and seven near-falls.

 

As a sophomore in 2009-2010, LaBeef went 10-9 at 133-141 lbs. with 16 takedowns, 11 reversals, 20 escapes, seven near-falls and five pins on the season. He placed second at 133 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14) and second at 141 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14).

 

As a freshman in 2008-2009, LaBeef went 15-13 with four pins and two major decisions while at WPI.

 

LaBeef is a graphic design major and a 2008 graduate of Pomfret School.

 

Senior Mike Sugermeyer (Hampden, MA) closed out his four-year career at RIC with a 57-51 record (.528) to go along with 127 takedowns, 24 reversals, 106 escapes, 44 near-falls and 13 pins.

 

As a senior in 2012-2013, Sugermeyer was named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star and was also named the team’s MVP. He earned All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a fourth place finish at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships on March 2-3. Earlier in the year, Sugermeyer was named to the All-Tournament Team after going a perfect 4-0 at the 2013 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals on March 27. He compiled a record of 27-7 at 125 lbs. to go along with 61 takedowns, 10 reversals, 25 escapes, 21 near-falls and four pins. Sugermeyer placed second at 125 lbs. at the East Coast Holiday Classic on Dec. 21, third at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and sixth at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17. He earned Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week honors once on the season.

 

As a junior in 2011-2012, Sugermeyer went 9-21 at 133 lbs. to go along with 19 takedowns, six reversals, 36 escapes, seven near-falls and two pins.

 

As a sophomore in 2010-2011, Sugermeyer went 11-8 overall at 125 lbs. to go along with 23 takedowns, two reversals, 15 escapes, five near-falls and five pins.

 

As a freshman in 2009-2010, Sugermeyer went 10-15 at 125-133 lbs. with 24 takedowns, six reversals, 30 escapes, 11 near-falls and three pins on the season. He placed third at 125 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament (Feb. 14) and sixth at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30). 

 

Sugermeyer is a psychology major with a minor in business management and a 2009 graduate of Minnechaug High School.

 

Junior Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) went 8-9 at 149-157 lbs. with 15 takedowns, eight reversals, 19 escapes and 12 near-falls.

 

Junior Josh Harrison (Mechanicville, NY) was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star. He finished 8-14 at 157-165 lbs. with 11 takedowns, eight reversals, 11 escapes, nine near-falls and four pins.

 

Junior Adam Lynch (New Milford, CT) was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star and was also named to the league’s Scholar-Athlete Team. Lynch went 13-23 at 184 lbs. to go along with 34 takedowns, four reversals, 30 escapes, four near-falls and five pins. He placed fourth at 184 lbs. at the East Coast Holiday Classic on Dec. 21.

 

Junior Jonathan Murray (Brentwood, NY) was named a 2013 Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and was also named to the Pilgrim League’s Scholar-Athlete Team. He went 19-7 at 125-133 lbs. with 55 takedowns, 10 reversals, 26 escapes, 19 near-falls and five pins on the season. Murray placed second at 125 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and third at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17.

 

Junior Silas Murray (Brentwood, NY) was named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star. He went 19-9 at 133 lbs. with 50 takedowns, eight reversals, 14 escapes, 11 near-falls and two pins on the season. Murray took first place at 133 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and was named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week once on the year.

 

Junior Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star. Nicoll earned All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a sixth place finish at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships on March 2-3. He compiled a 27-9 record at 285 lbs. to go along with 36 takedowns, two reversals, 32 escapes, seven near-falls and eight pins on the season. Nicoll placed third at 285 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and fourth at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17. He was named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week once on the year.

 

Junior Ryan Rheaume (Riverhead, NY) closed out the season with an 8-6 record at 157 lbs. to go along with 23 takedowns, 17 escapes, four near-falls and one pin.

 

Sophomore Richard Broderick (Roslindale, MA) went 10-12 at 285 lbs. with 16 takedowns, 17 escapes, three near-falls and two pins.

 

Sophomore Jonathan Costa (New Bedford, MA) finished with a 5-4 record at 133 lbs. to go along with nine takedowns, four reversals, two escapes and three near-falls.

 

Sophomore Kyle Humphries (East Longmeadow, MA) closed out the season with a 6-12 record at 197 lbs. to go along with eight takedowns, two reversals, 18 escapes, five near-falls and two pins. He placed third at 197 lbs. at the East Coast Holiday Classic on Dec. 21.

 

Sophomore Robert Sotelo (Little Falls, NJ) was an Honorable Mention to the Pilgrim League All-Star Team. He finished with a 13-20 record at 165-174 lbs. to go along with 71 takedowns, one reversal, 30 escapes, six near-falls and one pin.

 

Freshman Cameron Chisholm (Needham, MA) went 3-3 at 197 lbs. with five reversals, three escapes, one near-fall and two pins.

 

Freshman Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) was named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Year and was also named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star. He went 21-8 at 133-141 lbs. with 63 takedowns, seven reversals, 27 escapes, 15 near-falls and one pin on the year. Cole took first place at 133 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17 and placed sixth at 141 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10. During the season, he was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week once and also garnered Pilgrim League Rookie of the Week honors on one occasion.

 

Freshman Michael Murphy (North Providence, RI) went 5-8 at 133-149 lbs. with 15 takedowns, two reversals and 16 escapes.

 

Freshman Damen Patisaul (Plant City, FL) finished the season with a 6-11 record at 133-141 lbs. to go along with 17 takedowns, six reversals, seven escapes, four near-falls and two pins.

 

Freshman Chris Pecora (Carmel, NY) went 0-1 at 141 lbs. with two escapes.
