Asiedu Helps Anchormen Salvage
Tie in 2013 Opener at Ramapo

Mahwah, N.J.-Junior forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) forced overtime with a goal in the 89th minute as the Rhode Island College men's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 3-3 overtime tie vs. Ramapo at the President's Cup on Friday afternoon.


After falling behind, 0-2, the Roadrunners fought back to take the lead with a goal from rookie Nick Brancato, but with 1:26 left to play in the game, Asiedu hit the back of the net forcing overtime.

Sophomore forward Jose Zarraga (East Providence, RI) scored first in the game for the Anchormen after capitalizing on a penalty kick just under five minutes into the game. Freshman midfielder Anderson Monteiro (Pawtucket, RI) put the Anchormen up two goals to none before junior Dan Boffa closed the gap with a goal for the Roadrunners, off a dish from Santiago Raigoza. Senior Dave Przybylo, off an assist from rookie Rich Kehoe, knotted the game at 2-2 at the 74:44 minute mark, and Brancato took a dish from Rob Shaliker take a 3-2 lead with just over 11 minute to play in regulation. Asiedu's last minute goal was the team's third shot of the period.


Overtime periods remained scoreless where Rhode Island held a slight edge in shots, 3-2, wrapping up the match-up tied at 3-3.


Ramapo held a 14-9 advantage in shots on the day while sophomore goalkeeper Brian Petrunik made five saves in goal for Ramapo.  Freshman goalie Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) made seven saves in the 110 minutes for the Anchormen.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will face The College of New Jersey tomorrow afternoon (1 p.m.).
