REDDY & TIBERI KEEP ROLLING AS ANCHORWOMEN OUTLAST EMERSON, 6-3

Providence, R.I.-Led by the freshman duo of Julie Reddy (Greenville, RI) and Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI), the Rhode Island College womenís tennis team knocked off Emerson College, 6-3, on Tuesday night in non-conference action played at the RIC Tennis Courts.

 

Rhode Island College opens the season with a 7-0 record overall for the first time since 2004, when the Anchorwomen finished the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record.

 

As for Reddy and Tiberi, the tandem picked up their seventh consecutive victory and improved to 7-0 at No. 2 doubles with a 9-7 win over their counterparts, juniors Natalie Nicholas (Syosset, NY) and Jana Winfield (Andover, MA), to help spark the Anchorwomen.

Junior Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) and sophomore Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) also earned an 8-0 shutout victory at No. 3 doubles for RIC, while seniors Lacey Russell (Roswell, GA) and Savannah Mosser (Malibu, CA) tallied an 8-1 victory for Emerson (0-4) at No. 1 doubles to send the visitors into singles play trailing by one.

 

Reddy followed her doubles performance with what proved to the match-sealing victory at No. 4 singles, as the freshman took down Nicholas (3-6, 6-1, 10-6) to propel the hosts to victory. Tiberi stayed hot with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to give the Anchorwomen a late boost, while Cannata continued her winning ways with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. Freshman Jorgie Martin (Smithfield, RI) also notched a win for RIC at No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-0).

 

The Lions recorded a pair of singles victories, keyed by Russellís stellar outing at No. 1 singles. She outlasted sophomore Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) in the first flight (7-6 (7-3), 6-0), while Mosser earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at UMass Boston on Saturday, Sept. 21 (1 p.m.).
