RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE ENDS REGULAR SEASON IN, 15-8, LOSS TO HUSKIES

Providence, R.I.-Senior midfielder Jessalyn O’Neill (North Providence, RI) posted two goals and two assists for four points, but Rhode Island College closed out the regular season in a 15-8 loss to Southern Maine in Little East Conference women’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Anchorwomen (7-7, 1-5 LEC) are the sixth seed in the upcoming 2014 Little East Conference Women’s Lacrosse Tournament and will travel to third-seeded Plymouth State on Tuesday, April 29 in first round action. The Huskies (7-8, 3-3 LEC) are the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday.

 

USM senior midfielder Rosie Forster (Andover, MA) carried the offense for the visitors, registering five goals in the win. Classmate midfielder Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, ME) scored four times, while freshman attacker Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, ME) potted a pair.

Forster put in an all-around effort as she also contributed five ground balls, five caused turnovers and came away with two draw controls. Kelly corralled five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Freshman midfielder Heather Everett (Waterboro, ME) came off the bench to pick up five ground balls.

 

Junior attacker Jessica Ricci (Hope, RI) netted a hat trick for the Anchorwomen, while classmate attacker Danielle Landon (Wading River, NY) picked up two strikes. Junior midfielder Harmony Tillison (Cranston, RI) and senior defender Sam Nolte (Cranston, RI) each snared six ground balls, with Nolte causing five Husky miscues on the defensive side. Sophomore defender Ashley Alardi (North Providence, RI) registered four draw controls.

 

Forster and Kelly staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the first half, before Landon tallied with 22:15 left. The Huskies rattled off four straight, as Lessard, Forster, Kelly and junior attacker Nicole LaPlante (South Portland, ME) each scored, to build a 6-1 advantage with 10 minutes left in the stanza. Kelly scored with five minutes left to make 8-2, but back-to-back strikes from Landon and O’Neill pulled RIC within four with just under two minutes remaining.

USM junior midfielder Laura Fay (Falmouth, ME) and senior attacker Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, ME) scored in the final minute to give the visitors a 10-4 lead at halftime.

 

After Ricci scored 1:08 into the second half, the tandem of Forster and Kelly scored to the Huskies a commanding, 12-5, advantage. Sophomore attacker Shauna Robert (Lyman, ME) scored with three minutes left in the game to give USM a 15-6 advantage. O’Neill and senior attacker Ashley Appel (Foxboro, MA) tallied in the final minutes for the Anchorwomen.

 

USM senior goalkeeper Kim Vogel (Sanford, ME) made six saves to earn the win (7-8). RIC senior goalie Taryn Carbone (Cranston, RI) made 16 saves in the loss (6-7).

were honored prior to the game as part of Senior Day.

 

The Huskies held the advantage in shots, 41-20, ground balls, 32-30, and draw controls, 14-11.
