RIC ADVANCES WITH WIN OVER UMASS DARTMOUTH AT LITTLE EAST TOURNAMENT

Willimantic, Conn.-Freshman designated player Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI as sixth-seeded Rhode Island College held off fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth to win, 5-4, in game five of the 2014 Little East Conference Softball Tournament played at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday morning.

The Anchorwomen (14-24) advance to face the winner of fifth-seeded Keene State vs. third-seeded Western Connecticut (noon.) at 4 p.m. The Corsairs (11-21) will play an elimination game with the loser of that contest at 2 p.m.

RIC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, loading the bases with two down. Duvall singled through the left side to bring in senior outfielders Stacy Pokora (Wilton, CT) and Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, RI).

UMD struck back with a run in the home half of the inning when freshman second baseman Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, NJ) contributed an RBI infield single.

In the second inning, sophomore catcher Tori Lussier (North Franklin, CT) reached on an error and moved up to third on freshman second baseman Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) double to right center. Freshman left fielder Lindsey Cabral (North Providence, RI) followed with an infield single to shortstop, but a throwing error allowed DiScuillo to score.

RIC increased its lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth when freshman pinch runner Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT) scored on an error and Lussier came across on a wild pitch.

The Corsairs made an impressive comeback in the bottom of the sixth as freshman center fielder Ally Santerre (Swansea, MA), sophomore right fielder Rachel Carey (Holbrook, MA) and freshman catcher Chelsea Correia (Bridgewater, MA) each knocked in a run with RBI singles.

UMass Dartmouth nearly tied the game in its final at-bat. With runners on first and third and one away, junior shortstop Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, CT) gunned down the potential tying run at the plate and senior pitcher Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) ended the game by inducing a ground out.

UMD sophomore left fielder Shannon Droney (Franklin, MA) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA) took the loss (9-14), allowing five runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits in seven innings.

Sylvestre picked up the win (8-10), allowing four runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits to go along with five strikeouts in seven innings.

RIC made three errors, while UMD committed six miscues in the game.
