ANCHORMEN END SEASON IN, 10-0, LOSS TO
SOUTHERN MAINE AT LITTLE EAST TOURNAMENT

Mansfield, Conn.-Top-seeded Southern Maine defeated sixth-seeded Rhode Island College, 10-0, in game eight of the 2014 Little East Conference Baseball Tournament played at Eastern Connecticut’s Eastern Stadium on Friday afternoon.

 

Rhode Island College (13-23) sees its season come to an end in the loss. The Huskies (30-11) advance to play fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth at 6 p.m.

 

Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when senior catcher Matt Verrier (Norway, ME) smacked a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for his seventh homer of the year.

 

The Huskies tacked on six runs in the third as sophomore shortstop Sam Dexter (Oakland, ME) singled with one away to get things moving. Dexter advanced to third on a pair of passed balls and then scored easily on senior center fielder Forest Chadwick’s (Gardiner, ME) RBI triple to left center field. Classmate designated hitter Chris Bernard (Scarborough, ME) followed with an RBI double. Bernard advanced to third on senior first baseman John Carey’s (South Portland, ME) infield single and then scored on a Verrier RBI single. Senior third baseman Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, MA) dealt a lethal blow with a three-run bomb (2) to increase USM’s advantage to 7-0 before the Anchormen ended the frame.

In the fifth, Chad led off with a single as Southern Maine loaded the bases with no outs. He then came across with the frame’s lone run when Verrier grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

 

The Huskies increased their lead to 9-0 in the sixth as Chad led off with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Bernard. Dexter smacked a solo homer (2) in the eighth, which allowed the game to end an inning early after the Anchormen failed to score in the home half of the frame.

 

USM sophomore Shyler Scates (Jefferson, ME) picked up the win (6-3), allowing just six hits to go along with three strikeouts in the shutout effort. RIC senior starter C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI) took the loss (5-6), allowing seven runs on nine hits in four innings after making his second start in two days. Sophomore Angelo St. Laurent (Cranston, RI) threw four innings of relief.

 

Dexter went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI, one double and a homer, while Thibodeau went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.  Chadwick went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and two triples.
