2013-14 Rhode Island College Wrestling
Season Summary

(16-4 Overall; 10-3 in the New England Wrestling Association)
Seventh Place at the NCAA Northeast Regional

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Jay Jonesí (Career record: 199-138-1; .590) Anchormen finished the 2013-14 season with a 16-4 overall record and a 10-3 mark against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opposition.

 

Rhode Island College sent two wrestlers to the 2014 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with one wrestler returning home as the programís first All-American since 2011. The Anchormen finished 42nd overall (59 teams) with a score of 5.5.

 

Prior to that, four Anchormen placed in the top five in their respective weight classes and earned All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors at the 2014 NCAA Regional Championships in Middletown, Conn. Rhode Island College finished seventh overall (18 teams) with a score of 59.5.

 

 

 

Meanwhile, Rhode Island College saw five of its wrestlers earn NEWA postseason honors and one of its wrestlers attain National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American status for the second consecutive season.

 

Earlier in the year, RIC took first place (15 teams) with a score of 128.0 at the 2014 Mt. St. Vincent Dolphin Invitational on Jan. 18, while also placing fourth (17 teams) with a score of 117.5 at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23.

 

Senior Kevin Barrucci (Burlington, MA) closed out his career with a 55-32 record (.632) to go along with 88 takedowns, 22 reversals, 72 escapes, 87 near-falls and eight pins.

 

As a senior in 2013-14, Barrucci finished the season with a 10-3 record at 157 lbs. to go along with 13 takedowns, four reversals, one escape, 20 near-falls and two pins. He earned a sixth place finish at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23.

 

As a junior in 2012-13, Barrucci went 8-9 at 149-157 lbs. with 15 takedowns, eight reversals, 19 escapes and 12 near-falls. 

 

As a sophomore in 2011-12, Barrucci earned All-New England honors with a sixth place finish at the 2012 NEWA Championships on Feb. 25-26. He ended the season with a 25-12 record at 157 lbs. to go along with 38 takedowns, six reversals, 31 escapes, 41 near-falls and three pins. Barrucci placed second at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 12 and placed third at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 19.

 

As a freshman in 2010-11, Barrucci was 12-8 at 149-157 lbs. to go along with 22 takedowns, four reversals, 21 escapes, 14 near-falls and three pins. He placed sixth at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 13.

 

Barrucci is a sociology/justice studies major and a 2010 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

Senior Josh Harrison (Mechanicville, NY) wrapped up his career with a 23-26 record (.469) to go along with 39 takedowns, 20 reversals, 44 escapes, 19 near-falls and 10 pins.

 

As a senior in 2013-14, Harrison went 7-4 at 165 lbs. with 11 takedowns, five reversals, 21 escapes, two near-falls and two pins.

 

As a junior in 2012-13, Harrison was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star. He finished 8-14 at 157-165 lbs. with 11 takedowns, eight reversals, 11 escapes, nine near-falls and four pins.

 

As a sophomore in 2011-12, Harrison went 4-2 at 157 lbs. with five takedowns, one escape, three near-falls and three pins.

 

As a freshman in 2010-11, Harrison was 4-6 from 157-174 lbs. to go along with 12 takedowns, seven reversals, 11 escapes, five near-falls and one pin.

 

Harrison is a management major and a 2010 graduate of Mechanicville High School.

 

Senior Silas Murray (Brentwood, NY) closed out his two-year career at Rhode Island College with a 46-12 record (.793) to go along with 95 takedowns, 13 reversals, 33 escapes, 24 near-falls and four pins.

 

As a senior in 2013-14, Murray was named a First Team NEWA All-Star at 133 lbs and was named RICís most outstanding wrestler. Murray became the programís first All-American since 2011 after he went 3-2 and finished seventh at the 2014 NCAA Div. III Wrestling National Championships on March 15. Murray sealed a trip to the NCAA Championships after going 3-1 with a major decision at 133 lbs. to finish second at the 2014 Northeast Regional Championship on March 1-2.

 

The senior led the Anchormen in wins and posted a remarkable 27-3 record at 133 lbs. to go along with 45 takedowns, five reversals, 19 escapes, 13 near-falls and two pins. Murray finished first at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational on Jan. 18 and second at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23.

 

As a junior in 2012-13, Murray was named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star. He went 19-9 at 133 lbs. with 50 takedowns, eight reversals, 14 escapes, 11 near-falls and two pins on the season. Murray took first place at 133 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and was named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week once on the year.

 

As a sophomore in 2011-12, Murray earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish while at Nassau Community College. As a freshman in 2010-11, Murray earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish while at Nassau Community College.

 

Murray is a youth development major with a minor in coaching and a 2007 graduate of Brentwood High School.

 

Senior Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) wrapped up his career with a 74-31 record (.705) to go along with 73 takedowns, six reversals, 97 escapes, 20 near-falls and 19 pins.

 

As a senior in 2013-14, Nicoll was an Honorable Mention NEWA All-Star at 285 lbs. He earned All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a fifth place finish on March 2. For the season, Nicoll went 18-5 with 15 takedowns, two reversals, 19 escapes, four near-falls and five pins. He placed fourth after going 3-1 at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23.

 

As a junior in 2012-13, Nicoll was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star. He earned All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a sixth place finish at the 2013 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships on March 2-3. Nicoll compiled a 27-9 record at 285 lbs. to go along with 36 takedowns, two reversals, 32 escapes, seven near-falls and eight pins on the season. He placed third at 285 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and fourth at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17. Nicoll named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week once on the year.

 

As a sophomore in 2011-12, Nicoll finished the season with a 10-5 record at 285 lbs. to go along with 11 takedowns, one reversal, 14 escapes, six near-falls and two pins.

 

As a freshman in 2010-11, Nicoll earned All-New England Honors by placing fourth at the NEWA Championships on Feb. 21. He was 19-12 at 285 lbs. with 11 takedowns, one reversal, 32 escapes, three near-falls and four pins on the season. Nicoll placed second at 285 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational (Nov. 14), fourth at the Ursinus Invitational (Jan. 16) and sixth at the Citrus Invitational (Dec. 30). He was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star.

 

Nicoll is a history/political science major and a 2009 graduate of Timberlane Regional High School.

 

Junior Joseph Mahoney (Dedham, MA) finished his career with a 7-12 record (.368) to go along with 13 takedowns, two reversals, 20 escapes, seven near-falls, and six pins.  He has a year of eligibility remaining, but is graduating.

 

As a junior in 2013-14, Mahoney closed out the season with a 6-7 record at 174-197 lbs. to go along with nine takedowns, one reversal, 11 escapes, two near-falls and six pins. Mahoney went 3-1 at 174 lbs. and earned a second place finish at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

As a sophomore in 2011-12, Mahoney went 1-3 at 165 lbs. with three takedowns, one reversal, six escapes and three near-falls.

 

As a freshman in 2010-11, Mahoney went 0-2 at 184 lbs. with one takedown, three escapes and two near-falls.

 

Mahoney is a justice studies major and a 2009 graduate of Dedham High School.

 

Junior Robert Sotelo (Little Falls, NJ) finished his career with a 44-42 record (.512) to go along with 183 takedowns, seven reversals, 87 escapes, 17 near-falls, and four pins. He has a year of eligibility remaining, but is graduating.

 

As a junior in 2013-14, Sotelo closed out the year with a 14-6 record at 165-174 lbs. to go along with 51 takedowns, two reversals, 18 escapes, three near-falls, and two pins. He went 5-2 at 165 lbs. en route to a sixth place finish at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23.

 

As a sophomore in 2012-13, Sotelo was an Honorable Mention to the Pilgrim League All-Star Team. He finished with a 13-20 record at 165-174 lbs. to go along with 71 takedowns, one reversal, 30 escapes, six near-falls and one pin.

 

As a freshman in 2011-12, Sotelo went 17-16 at 165-174 lbs. to go along with 61 takedowns, four reversals, 39 escapes, eight near-falls and one pin.

 

Sotelo is a finance major with a minor in management and a 2010 graduate of Passaic Valley High School.

 

Junior Jonathan Costa (New Bedford, MA) finished the season with a 7-4 record at 133-141 lbs. to go along with 19 takedowns, one reversal, 12 escapes, one near-fall and one pin. He placed fourth at the 2013 Doug Parker Invitational.

 

Junior Kyle Humphries (East Longmeadow, MA) closed out the season with a 12-5 record at 184 lbs. to go along with 25 takedowns, three reversals, 18 escapes, three near-falls and three pins. He went 3-1 en route to a fourth place finish at 184 lbs. at the 2013 Doug Parker Invitational. Humphries went 2-0 and earned a sixth place finish at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Junior Brohen Krsulic (Brooklyn, CT) went 11-11 at 174-197 lbs. with 23 takedowns, four reversals, 26 escapes, one near-fall and two pins. He finished fifth at 174 lbs. with a 3-2 record at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Junior Jonathan Murray (Brentwood, NY) was named a First Team NEWA All-Star at 125 lbs. He qualified for the NCAA Div. III Wrestling National Championships on March 14-15 and went 1-2 on the weekend after earning All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a third place effort on March 2. Murray was also named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) for the second consecutive season. For the season, he went 20-6 with 39 takedowns, 13 reversals, 18 escapes, 18 near-falls and four pins. Murray placed first at 125 lbs. at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Junior Joseph Slane (Tomkins Cove, NY) wrapped up the season with a 7-3 record at 149 lbs. to go along with 13 takedowns, two reversals, six escapes, one near-fall and one pin. He was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2014 NEWA Dual Championship on Jan. 26 after going 2-0 at 149 lbs. Slane finished third at 149 lbs. with a 3-1 record at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Sophomore Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) was named a Second Team NEWA All-Star at 141 lbs. Cole earned All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a fifth place finish on March 2. He finished the year with a 24-5 record to go along with 62 takedowns, one reversal, eight escapes, 19 near-falls and eight pins. He placed first at the 2013 Doug Parker Invitational and sixth at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Sophomore Brandon Conrad (East Bridgewater, MA) was an Honorable Mention NEWA All-Star at 165 lbs. He closed out the season with a 15-12 record to go along with 28 takedowns, five reversals, 21 escapes, 14 near-falls and four pins. He finished fifth at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Sophomore Chris Kelly (Franklin, MA) went 6-6 at 149 lbs. to go along with nine takedowns, three reversals, 17 escapes, two near-falls and three pins.

 

Sophomore Damen Patisaul (Plant City, FL) wrapped up the season with a 10-5 record at 133-149 lbs. to go along with 19 takedowns, one reversal, 13 escapes, five near-falls and six pins. He finished sixth at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Sophomore Chris Pecora (Carmel, NY) went 4-9 at 141-157 lbs. with nine takedowns, six reversals, 13 escapes, four near-falls and one pin. He finished fifth at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Freshman Justin Caparco (Johnston, RI) finished the season with a 17-6 record at 165-184 lbs. to go along with 33 takedowns, seven reversals, 18 escapes, four near-falls and three pins.

 

Freshman Mark Carroll (Needham, MA) went 1-2 at 133 lbs. with four takedowns, one escape and one near-fall.

 

Freshman Jake Dorman (Foxboro, MA) closed out the season with a 2-8 record at 125-141 lbs. to go along with five takedowns, one reversal, eight escapes and two near-falls.

 

Freshman Steven Duran (Providence, RI) went 2-1 at 141-149 lbs. with three takedowns, two reversals and three escapes.

 

Freshman John Georges (Cranston, RI) posted a 13-15 record at 197-285 lbs. to go along with 21 takedowns, six reversals, 29 escapes, 10 near-falls and five pins. He finished fourth at 197 lbs. at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

Freshman Kyle Lake (Toms River, NJ) finished the season with a 16-12 record at 149-157 lbs. to go along with 36 takedowns, seven reversals, 28 escapes, nine near-falls and five pins. He finished fifth at 157 lbs. at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.
