RIC WOMEN’S TENNIS PICKED NO. 1 IN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE PRESEASON COACHES POLL

Providence, R.I.-Following a championship match appearance in 2013, the Rhode Island College women’s tennis squad has been announced as the preseason favorite to win the Little East Conference in 2014 after a vote by the league’s nine coaches.

It is the first time in program history that the Anchorwomen have sat atop the preseason poll. RIC has won the Little East Regular Season Championship five times (2003-07), while claiming the Tournament title six times (1994, ’95, ’99, 2001, ’03, ’05).

2013 Little East Coach of the Year Adam Spring brings back three All-Conference singles players, in addition to a pair of All-Conference doubles selections, as the Anchorwomen look to build on a 2013 season which saw them set a school record for victories (14) and produce their highest winning percentage since 2006 (.824).

Junior No. 1 Singles Sadie Campanella

In addition to a battle-tested lineup, Spring has brought in several key recruits to bolster the roster. Junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) returns for a third campaign at No. 1 singles to lead the squad.

Senior Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) is expected to compete at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Julie Reddy (Greenville, RI) and junior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI), both All-LEC selections, will once again be among the top competitors at their respective flights.

All-LEC doubles standout Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) and freshmen Kim Daigle (Sterling, MA) and Lara Nastasi (Smithville, NJ) will also play pivotal roles this fall.

Rhode Island College received seven of eight first place votes for 71 points. Two-time defending champions Bridgewater State picked up the remaining first place vote and are picked second with 52 points. Rounding out the poll are: UMass Dartmouth (42 points), Worcester State (41 points), Plymouth State (38 points), UMass Boston (37 points), Southern Maine (30 points), Salem State (22 points) and Western Connecticut (19 points).

In upcoming action, RIC opens the 2014 season at home against Wentworth on Saturday, Aug. 30 (noon).
