JOHNSON NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM AS ANCHORWOMEN GO 0-3 AT BRANDEIS INVITATIONAL

Waltham, Mass.-Sophomore middle hitter Dara Johnson (Boston, MA) was named to the All-Tournament team as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team dropped three matches at the 2014 Brandeis University Invitational on Sept. 5-6.

 

RIC (0-4) was led on the weekend by junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI), who finished with a team-high 20 kills, 27 digs and four service aces. Classmate outside hitter Michelle Malbouef (Cumberland, RI) recorded 20 kills and 13 digs, while Johnson finished with 17 kills, one service ace, three digs and two solo blocks. Freshman setter  Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) led RIC with 74 assists in the three matches.

 

The first match of the weekend saw the Anchorwomen fall to the Wellesley College Blue, 3-0 (17-25, 10-25, 16-25), on Sept. 5. Malbouef and freshman middle hitter Logan Fontes (East Providence, RI) each recorded three kills, while Palazzini led the Anchorwomen with six kills and seven digs. White recorded 17 assists for the match.

The second match for the Anchorwomen was a five-set loss to the Emerson College Lions, 3-2 (18-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 7-15), on Sept. 6. The Anchorwomen dropped the first two sets, but battled back to force a deciding fifth against the Lions. The fifth set saw RIC fall, 15-7. Fontes and Palazzini had an amazing match, combining for 22 kills, 17 digs and two solo blocks. White led the way again with 36 assists while junior setter Hannah Cole (Coventry, RI) recorded 11 digs in the setback.

 

 The final contest for the Anchorwomen saw them fall in three sets to Emmanuel College (15-25, 10-25, 14-25) on Saturday afternoon. Malboeuf led the team with 10 kills, while White again paced the team with 21 assists. Johnson tallied four kills and one ace, while Logan Fontes notched six kills and one block in the setback.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Clark on Tuesday, Sept. 9 (7 p.m.).
