FONTES & MALBOEUF LEAD
ANCHORWOMEN IN, 3-0, LOSS TO CLARK

Worcester, Mass.-Freshman middle hitter Logan Fontes (East Providence, RI) and junior outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) each recorded eight kills, while freshman setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) tallied a team high 17 assists, but it wasn’t enough as the Rhode Island College women's volleyball team fell to host Clark,  3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-18), on Tuesday night.

The first set saw a seesaw battle in the beginning with a kill by Fontes equalizing the score at 2-2. An 8-0 run by the home team capped by two service aces from freshman outside hitter Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), pushed the Cougar lead to eight, 10-2. An attacking error by sophomore Savannah Sanford (San Anselmo, CA) closed the deficit to three, 12-9, but that is as close as the Anchorwomen would come as Clark went on a 13-5 run to clinch the set, 25-14.

The second set saw RIC jump out to an early, 7-4, lead on a kill by Fontes with the assist coming from junior Morgan Stewart (Willington, CT). The sides traded points until the score was even at 11-11. Eight straight points, capped by senior Mel Conde's (Union City, CA) two aces, pushed the Clark lead out to 19-11, a lead it wouldn’t relinquish, as they concluded the set with a 25-16 victory.

A Fontes' kill early in the third set pushed the Anchorwomen lead to four, 6-2. The Anchorwomen held the advantage, 10-9, on an attacking error by Sanford, until a 4-0 mini-run, capped by a Sanford ace, put the Cougars up for good. Junior right side hitter Hannah Cole (Coventry, RI) recorded an ace to pull the Anchorwomen to within 5, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars pulled away for the 25-18 victory.

Rhode Island College finished the match with 25 kills and 23 assists, while the host Cougars finished with 35 kills, 33 assists and a .310 hitting percentage.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference play at home again Plymouth State on Saturday, Sept. 13 (noon).
