CANNATA HELPS RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE EDGE GORDON, 5-4, TO STAY UNBEATEN

Wenham, Mass.-Junior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) defeated freshman Nathalia Moran (Lake Villa, IL) (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) at No. 5 singles to move Rhode Island College’s unbeaten streak to five as the Anchorwomen topped Gordon College, 5-4, in women’s tennis action on Thursday afternoon.

 

No. 1 doubles saw Gordon (1-3) take the early lead when junior Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, CA) and freshman Sophie Linnell (Richmond, VA) defeated RIC (5-0) freshman Kim Daigle (Sterling, MA) and senior Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT), 8-5.

 

RIC answered back at No. 2 doubles when junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) and sophomore partner Julie Reddy (Greenville, RI) topped Moran and junior partner Lily Drescher (Reading, MA), 8-3.

No. 3 doubles saw sophomores Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) and Jorgie Martin (Smithfield, RI) defeat sophomore Abby Caron (Bedford, NH) and freshman Alexa DiDomizio (Mahwah, NJ), 8-6, to clinch the 2-1 lead going in to singles play.

 

Campanella topped Yeaw (6-2, 6-2) at No. 1 singles, while No. 2 singles saw Linnell top Daigle (3-6, 6-7 (3-7)). Brown fell at No. 3 singles to Drescher (7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 4-10) while Reddy defeated Caron (6-0, 2-6, 6-0) at No. 4 singles. Sixth singles saw Martin fall to DiDomizio (6-1, 6-2).

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference play at home against Southern Maine on Saturday, Sept. 13 (1 p.m.).
