ANCHORWOMEN BLANK SOUTHERN MAINE, 9-0, TO OPEN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE PLAY

Providence, R.I.-Freshman Laura Nastasi (Smithville, NJ) earned a straight set victory at No. 6 singles, while senior Chelsea Brown (Wallingford, CT) earned victories in doubles and singles action, as the Rhode Island College women’s tennis team opened Little East Conference play with a 9-0 victory over Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.

 

Rhode Island College’s (6-0, 1-0 LEC) No. 1 doubles saw the familiar pairing of Brown and freshman partner Kim Daigle (Sterling, MA) top Southern Maine (1-3, 0-2 LEC) juniors Sarah Hill (Topsham, ME) and Molly Gallagher (South Portland, ME), 8-5.

RIC junior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) and sophomore Julie Reddy (Smithfield, RI) defeated junior Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, ME) and sophomore Katie Quinn (Hollis, ME) with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.

 

The sophomore pairing of Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) and Jorgie Martin (Greenville, RI) bested USM junior Emily Estes (Gorham, ME) and sophomore Emily Collins (St. David, ME), 8-2, at the third doubles flight.

 

Singles action saw the Anchorwomen earn all six points. Campanella topped Hill (6-1, 6-2) at No. 1 singles, while Daigle defeated Gallagher (6-1, 6-2) at the second flight. No. 3 singles saw Brown top Aldrich (6-1, 6-1), while Reddy topped Quinn (6-1, 6-0) at the No. 4 position. Junior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, RI) topped Estes (6-1, 6-0) at No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles saw Nastasi defeat Collins (6-1, 6-1).  

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Emerson on Tuesday, Sept. 16 (4:30 p.m.).
