PALAZZINI LEADS THE WAY AS ANCHORWOMEN
WIN SECOND STRAIGHT MATCH

Newton, Mass.-Junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) recorded a team high 12 kills, freshman setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) dished out 28 assists and knocked down five service aces, as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team picked up their second victory of the season, defeating Lasell, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20), on Tuesday night.

RIC (2-5) and Lasell (2-11) began by trading the first eight points of the evening. A quick 3-0 run, capped by a kill from RIC junior middle hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI), gave the Anchorwomen the breathing room they would need as they stopped a late Lasell run to take the first set by four, 25-21.

The second set was one of runs as back-to-back kills by Palazzini put the Anchorwomen up, 8-1, early. An 11-5 Lasell run followed, capped by an ace from freshman setter Lauren Piper (Scarborough, ME), brought the score to within one, 13-12. That would be as close as the Lasers would get as Rhode Island College finished the game on a 12-5 run for the 25-17 victory.

The Anchorwomen looked to end the third set early after consecutive service aces by White put the squad up 18-11 over the hosts. Junior outside hitter Heather Longley (North Granby, CT) brought the final set to within four, 24-20, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Lasers as White set up Malboeuf for the kill to give the Anchorwomen the 25-20 victory in the set, and the 3-0 match victory.

Along with Palazzini and White, the Anchorwomen were led by freshman outside hitter Megan Stanzione (Wilton, CT), who had a team-high 17 digs and sophomore middle hitter Dara Johnson (Boston, MA) who posted three block assists.

The Lasers were paced by freshman middle hitter Odina Ellis (Providence, RI) with six kills, while freshman right side hitter Michele Canestro (Castleton, NY) and sophomore defensive specialist Cassandra Stout (Plymouth, MA) each recorded eight digs.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Worcester State on Thursday, Sept. 18 (7 p.m.).
