GONSALVES NETS HAT TRICK AS UMASS DARTMOUTH CLOUTS RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE, 6-0

Providence, R.I.-UMass Dartmouth senior forward Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, MA) recorded three goals and one assist as the visiting Corsairs topped the Rhode Island College women’s soccer team, 6-0, in Little East Conference action played at the RIC Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon

UMass Dartmouth (2-4, 1-0 LEC) got on the board just nine seconds into the game when Gonsalves took a feed from senior forward Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, MA), ran though the defense and swept the ball past Rhode Island College (1-5, 0-1 LEC) senior goalkeeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) for the 1-0 lead.

The Corsairs continued the pressure early with Friedland scoring in the fourth minute to put UMD up 2-0. Two more goals by Gonsalves and a tally by sophomore defender Lucy Jensen (Boxborough, MA), with Gonsalves on the assist, raised the Corsairs advantage to 5-0 with 32 minutes left to play in the game.

The Anchorwomen settled down in the final 30 minutes with Maia coming up with several crucial saves to keep the score where it was. The Corsairs continued the pressure late with freshman forward Courtney Bailen (Millis, MA) rocketing a shot off the post at the 88th minute, which was inadvertently kicked into the net by the Anchorwomen defense.

Gonsalves scored three goals on the day and added one helper, while Friedland notched one goal and three assists. Jensen contributed one goal and two assists, while freshman midfielder Lily Higgins (Hanson, MA) and sophomore midfielder Erica Farias (Tiverton, RI) each recorded and assist in the victory.

The Anchorwomen were led by junior forwards Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) and Charissa Champagne (North Providence, RI), who combined for six shots, with four and two, respectively, on the day.

Maia (1-3) made 16 saves in the loss and recorded her third game with double digit saves on the year. Sophomore goaltender Nikki Butts (Milford, MA) (1-0) made three saves in the victory for the Corsairs.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Framingham State on Wednesday, Sept. 24 (6 p.m.).
