ASIEDUíS PENALTY KICK HELPS ANCHORMEN TO, 1-1, DOUBLE OVERTIME TIE AT UMASS DARTMOUTH

North Dartmouth, Mass.-Senior forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and freshman Adam Ghazal (Pawtucket, RI) notched eight saves as the Rhode Island College menís soccer team opened Little East play with a 1-1, double overtime time tie vs. UMass Dartmouth at Cressy Field on Saturday afternoon.

 

The opening stanza saw a defensive battle with RIC (4-3-1, 0-0-1 LEC) outshooting UMass Dartmouth (2-3-1, 0-0-1 LEC), 10-5. Ghazal parried away two shots in the period, while sophomore Luis Carranza (New Bedford, MA) stopped three shots for the Corsairs.

The Corsairs looked to take advantage of a Rhode Island College red card in the 53rd minute, but a shot from senior defender Alex Machado (New Bedford, MA) sailed wide of the net. Following a foul by UMD, Asiedu buried the ensuing penalty kick for his league-leading fourth marker of the season.

 

The Anchormen looked to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the match, but saw the Corsairs knot the game on a goal from Machado off a corner kick taken by sophomore Matt Vidal (New Bedford, MA) in the 71st minute.

 

Machado tried to give the Corsairs the lead in the 80th minute, but was turned away by Ghazal. Ghazal played the hero late, stopping a shot in the 106th minute to preserve the tie.

 

Ghazal (3-3-1) stopped eight shots, while Carranza made five saves for the Corsairs. The Anchormen outshot the Corsairs, 17-16, for the game.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Framingham State on Tuesday, Sept. 23 (4 p.m.).
