ASIEDU LEADS MEN'S SOCCER TO, 2-1, DOUBLE OVERTIME WIN AT FRAMINGHAM STATE

Framingham, Mass.-Senior forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) scored early in the second overtime session to give the Rhode Island College menís soccer team a 2-1 non-conference victory over Framingham State on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Rhode Island College (5-3-1, 0-0-1 LEC) got on the board just 1:55 into the match when junior forward Kevin Arboleda (Pawtucket, RI) took a cross from Asiedu and headed it home to give the Anchormen the early 1-0 lead.

The score would remain 1-0 until the 31st minute when Framingham State (3-3-1) junior midfielder Corey Carderio (Fall River, MA) scored on a penalty kick to even up the match, 1-1. The score would remain deadlocked entering halftime with RIC freshman goalie Adam Ghazal (Pawtucket, RI) recording two saves in the half, while Rams sophomore keeper Jacob Nichols (Sturbridge, MA) stopped three.

 

The second half saw a tightly contested battle with the Anchormen being outshot by the Rams, 8-2, in the stanza. The Rams looked to take the victory in the 97th minute when senior midfielder Nick Cotter (Sandwich, MA) snapped a header on net but Ghazal was up to the task, parrying it away. The first overtime ended with Ghazal making two stops, while Nichols didnít see any action.

The second overtime saw little action until the 106th minute when Asiedu chipped a Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, RI) cross into the upper right hand side of the net to give the Anchormen the 2-1 victory. With the goal, Asiedu moved into the Little East lead for goals on the season with five.

 

Ghazal (4-3-1) made five saves in the victory for the Anchormen while Nichols (3-3-1) stopped four in the defeat.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at home against Western Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 27 (1 p.m.).
