COLONIALS HAND ANCHORWOMEN, 5-0, SETBACK

Danbury, Conn.-Senior Sarah Menta (Newington, CT) registered a goal and an assist to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.

 

Western Connecticut (6-4, 2-0 LEC) got on the board in the 16th minute when Menta received a pass from sophomore forward Meaghan Gustafson (Newington, CT) and punched it past RIC (1-7, 0-2 LEC) senior goaltender Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.

 

Sophomore Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) made the lead 2-0 for Western three minutes later with an unassisted goal.

Menta delivered a pass to senior midfielder Emily Newhard (Wallingford, CT) who drove the shot home to put the Colonials up, 3-0.

 

Junior Rebecca Rivera (Monroe, CT) extended the Western lead to 4-0 at the 55:28 mark of the second half with an assist to sophomore Celia DeVoe (Farmington, CT).

 

Western held a 37-2 advantage in shots. Western’s freshman keeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) picked up the win, while sophomore Jenna Santoriello (Nesconset, NY) and freshman Abby Benner (Newington, CT) split time in the second half. Benner made the Colonials only save of the afternoon. 

 

Maia (1-7, 0-2) surrendered three goals to suffer the loss, before being replaced in the first half by senior Justina Thoma (Canterbury, CT). Thoma finished with nine saves.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Becker on Wednesday, Oct. 1 (4 p.m.).
