ANCHORWOMEN SPLIT AT EMERSON TRI-MATCH

Boston, Mass.-Junior middle hitting Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) registered a team-high 20 kills and sophomore middle hitter Sierra Smith (Longmont, CO) finished with 15 winners and three digs as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team split a tri-match, topping CCNY, 3-0, and falling to host Emerson, 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 26-24), on Saturday afternoon.

 

Rhode Island College (10-10) opened the day by topping CCNY (9-19), 3-0. Smith had a team-high nine kills in the match, while Malboeuf recorded eight kills and nine digs. Freshman setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) finished with a match-high 21 assists.

The Anchorwomen’s second match saw them fall to the host Lions (15-13), 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 26-24). RIC jumped out to a 13-9 advantage on a kill by Malboeuf. The Anchorwomen held the lead, 24-22, but four straight points by the Lions sealed the victory for the hosts.

 

The second set saw the Lions jump out to an early 17-13 advantage and never look back as they cruised to the 25-17 victory. The third set saw the Lions again jump out to a big lead 14-7, but a 15-8 run by the Anchorwomen, capped by a kill from junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI), knotted the score at 22-22. The Anchorwomen were on the verge of taking the third set, again holding a 24-22 lead, but a 4-0 run by the Lions put the set away.

 

Malboeuf finished the day with 20 kills, 22 digs, one assist and four blocks, while Palazzini finished with 14 kills and 16 digs. White handed out 49 assists for the Anchorwomen.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Johnson & Wales on Tuesday, Oct. 21 (7 p.m.).
