ASIEDU PICKS UP TWO GOALS AND AN ASSIST AS MEN'S SOCCER BLANKS SOUTHERN MAINE, 4-0, IN LEC ACTION

Gorham, Maine-Senior forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) scored two goals, including his sixth game-winning goal of the year, and freshman goalkeeper Adam Ghazal (Pawtucket, RI) recorded his third shutout of the season, as the Rhode Island College menís soccer team topped Southern Maine, 4-0, in Little East Conference action played at Hannaford Field on Saturday afternoon.

 

Rhode Island College (10-5-1, 3-2-1 LEC) got on the board in the seventh minute when Asiedu headed in a pass from junior forward Jose Zarraga (Providence, RI) by Southern Maine (2-13-2, 0-5-1 LEC) freshman goalkeeper Charles Mull (Portland, ME). The score would remain 1-0 until halftime. Ghazal wasnít tested during the stanza,  while Mull made three stops.

The second half saw the Anchormen score early and often.  Freshman forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) found the ball off a rebound from an Asiedu shot and ripped it home to double the Anchormen lead, 2-0. A foul in the box gave Asiedu his fifth opportunity at a PK on the season. He calmly stepped up and blasted the ball past the new USM goalie, sophomore Elijah Leverett (North Yarmouth, ME), for the 3-0 RIC advantage.

 

Junior forward Steven Cataldo (Attleboro, MA) rounded out the scoring in the 90th minute when he found the rebound off his own shot and slipped it into the net for the 4-0 lead. Ghazal (8-5) made two saves in the shutout, while Mull (0-6-2) made three saves in defeat. Leverett stopped five shots in relief

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host cross-city rival Johnson and Wales on Tuesday, Oct. 28 (4 p.m.). It will be Senior Day for the squad with a pre-game ceremony.
