ANCHORWOMEN SECURE, 3-0, WIN OVER SOUTHERN MAINE IN LITTLE EAST WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ACTION

Providence, R.I.-Junior middle hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) notched 11 kills and two digs, while sophomore libero Megan Armburg (Swansea, MA) recorded nine digs and five service aces, as the Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team topped Little East Conference foe Southern Maine, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19), at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

 

The first set saw a tightly contested battle with both teams trading points until late in the stanza. Rhode Island College (11-11, 3-2 LEC) pulled away from USM (15-12, 0-5 LEC) in the latter portion however, taking the first set victory, 25-19. Malboeuf led the Anchorwomen in kills for the set, while freshman outside hitter Jessica Williamson (Goffstown, NH) led the way for the Huskies.

The second set saw another close battle, with the Anchorwomen taking the lead late and pulling away for an identical 25-19 win and the 2-0 lead in the match. Junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) had three kills and sophomore middle hitter Sierra Smith (Longmont, CO) tallied two winners in the frame. Junior middle hitter Jessica Garrett (Waterboro, ME) notched two kills, while Williamson chipped in with four, for the visitors.

 

The third set saw the Anchorwomen open up a double digit lead early and hold on down the stretch, as a furious USM rally fell just short. The hosts took their third straight 25-19 victory on the day to win the match, 3-0.

 

For the match, the Anchorwomen were led by Malbouef's 11 kills and three blocks, freshman setter Abigayl White's (Coventry, RI), 26 assists, and Armburg’s nine digs and five aces.

 

 Williamson paced the Huskies with 13 kills and two aces, while sophomore setter Megan Nilson (Granby, CT) chipped in with 18 assists and four digs. Junior libero Demi Ruder (Grand Junction, CO) led the Huskies with four service aces.

 

 In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen travel to face Little East foe Western Connecticut State on Tuesday, Oct. 28 (7 p.m.).
