ANCHORWOMEN'S SEASON COMES TO AN END IN, 3-0, LOSS TO WESTERN CONNECTICUT IN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT ACTION

Danbury, Conn.-Junior middle hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) knocked down a team-high nine kills to go along with six digs as fifth-seeded Rhode Island College fell to fourth seeded Western Connecticut, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-18), in first round action of the 2014 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday night at Feldman Arena.

 

Western Connecticut (23-10) took a commanding first set by a score of 25-12. The Colonials hit .263 for the set, while the Anchorwomen (12-14) hit .176. The second set saw another commanding victory by the Colonials. They hit .345 (11-1-29) in the frame compared to -.037 for Rhode Island College. The final set saw the two teams in a tight battle with Western taking the 25-18 victory to close out the sweep and end RIC's season.

 

The Anchorwomen were led by Malboeuf’s nine kills, six digs and two aces, while freshman setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) notched team high’s in assists, (20) and digs (15). Sophomore middle hitter Sierra Smith (Longmont, CO) tallied two kills, one dig and one block in the defeat.

The Colonials were led by sophomore outside hitter Karissa Smith (Bristol, CT), freshman middle hitter Brittany Steele (Massapequa, NY) and sophomore utility player Jaqueline Kanuk (New Fairfield, CT) who each recorded five kills. Senior outside hitter Caitlin Van Camp (Redding, CT) paced the team with eight kills, two assists and two digs. Senior setter Jenny Hogan (Franklin Square, NY) led Western with 16 assists.

 

The 12 wins for the Anchorwomen mark a nine-win improvement from a season ago and the first time the Anchorwomen have reached double-digit victories since the 2012 season.

 

 The Colonials will advance to face top seed and tournament host UMass Boston in the semifinals on Friday evening.
