LANDON PUTS UP THREE AS ANCHORWOMEN FALL, 27-11, AT JOHNSON & WALES

Providence, R.I.-Senior attacker Danielle Landon (Wading River, NY) scored three goals and added  one helper as the Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team fell  to cross-city rival Johnson & Wales, 27-11, in non-conference action played at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex on Monday evening.

 

The early part of the half saw the teams trade the lead, with the Anchorwomen (0-5), taking the 3-2 advantage on a goal by senior attacker Jessica Ricci (Hope, RI) off a feed from sophomore attacker Betsy Heidel (Warwick, RI) with 24:26 left in the half.

 

The Wildcats (7-0) responded by rattling off five straight goals, capped by a tally from sophomore attacker Lydia Knapp (Glens Falls, NY) with 22:01 in the stanza. Three goals by the Anchorwomen cut the deficit down to one, 7-6, but the Wildcats bounced back by outscoring the Anchorwomen, 11-1, down the stretch to take a commanding, 18-7, lead into the half.

The second half saw the Wildcats continue to build on the lead, rattling off seven of the first 10 goals of the final frame to take a commanding, 25-10, lead.  Johnson & Wales’ Jordan Britt (Webster, NY) tallied a marker with 4:45 to up the JWU lead to 26-10 and a late strike by JWU gave the game its final, 27-11.

 

The Anchorwomen were paced by Ricci’s six goals and one assist with Heidel chipping in three goals and one assist. RIC freshman Alasondra Apici (Providence, RI) made 13 saves in the defeat.

 

Johnson & Wales was led by junior midfielder Jessica Schmell (Coopersburg, PA), who notched six goals. Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giampietro (Meriden, CT) made one save in the victory.

 

 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference action at Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, April 1 (4 p.m.).
