KLAWITTER & TIBERI WIN IN SINGLES AS RIC MEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO SUFFOLK, 6-3

Providence, R.I.-Freshman Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) and sophomore Chris Klawitter (Brooklyn, CT) won at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, but Rhode Island College fell to Suffolk, 6-3, at the RIC Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Rams (3-0) took two of three in doubles to start the contest. Senior Marc Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) and Calixto Romero (Lima, Peru) won at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Freshman Alonso Vela (Calexico, CA) and sophomore Francesco Saia (Wakefield, MA) secured an 8-3 victory at second doubles.

The RIC (0-3) duo of sophomore Brett Taggart (North Kingstown, RI) and senior Brian Gil (North Providence, RI) won, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles.

 

The visitors won the top four singles flights as Winkler (6-1, 6-0), Romero (6-1, 6-1), Vela (6-4, 6-4) and Saia (6-2, 6-0) each recorded straight-set victories from the No. 1 through the No. 4 flight, respectively.

 

Tiberi dropped his first set, 7-5, before bouncing back to win, 6-1 and 1-0 (10-7). Klawitter won his first set, 6-2, lost in the second (6-3), before winning the match with a 6-3 decision in the final set.

 

 In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Curry on Thursday, April 2 (4 p.m.).
